The Swan Ministries

Legacy Building

There comes a point in the life of many churches when they must confront the issue of sustainability or viability. During this critical time, it is essential to consider a variety of options and to seek divine guidance in discerning the path God is leading the congregation to follow.

There isn't a "right or wrong" answer here; the key is to remain true to the unique circumstances of your congregation and ministry. In navigating this process, it can be invaluable to involve someone from your judicatory or an outside consultant.

Here are a few options to consider:

Revitalized Congregation:

A dwindling congregation might pursue intentional revitalization. This process aims to rekindle the church's spirit and reconnect it with the surrounding community. It involves reshaping the church to better fit the needs and culture of the community it once served, offering a fresh look, vibe, and feel that resonates with today's audience.

Consolidation/Merger:

In a consolidation, two or more churches combine their resources to form a new church with a shared vision that addresses the needs of existing members while focusing on future growth. A merger similarly involves bringing together the resources of both churches. Both options have their advantages and disadvantages, which should be carefully and prayerfully considered.

Adoption:

Smaller congregations may choose adoption as a way to sustain their ministry. In this model, a smaller church becomes a satellite or sister church to a larger, healthier congregation. This option is also particularly beneficial for supporting youth ministries.

Per Diem Pastor:

Some congregations, facing limited resources, may opt for a part-time pastor who is bi-vocational or a lay pastor to provide essential ministries.

Relaunch as a New Church:

Relaunching as a new church is becoming increasingly popular. This option centers on a new mission and vision, often leading to a renewed and vibrant church community within a short timeframe, sometimes as quickly as four months.

Sunsetting or Legacy Church:

Some congregations may feel it's time to close, selling the building and assets to fund a new mission—whether that means caring for existing members or creating a nonprofit to address a community need.

Whichever path your church chooses, it will require solid data, meaningful conversations, deep prayer, openness to the Spirit's leading, and a partner to help guide you through the process. Swan Ministries is here to support you in this journey.
